These 2-ingredient soot sprite truffles are the cutest no-bake treat inspired by the fuzzy little soot sprites from Studio Ghibli films. They’re rich, chocolatey, and unbelievably easy to make - just cookies and cream cheese do all the work. No oven, no fancy techniques, and only a handful of minutes of prep. Decorations are optional, but they’re what turn these simple truffles into instantly recognizable soot sprites.
Perfect for anime parties, themed desserts, or when you want a fun treat with minimal effort.

What are Soot Sprites?
Soot sprites (also called susuwatari) are small, round, black dust creatures that appear in several Studio Ghibli films, most famously My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away. They’re known for their fuzzy black bodies, wide white eyes, and tiny star-shaped candie (konpeito)s they love to collect. Their simple shape makes them the perfect inspiration for an easy dessert - especially one that’s rolled into little balls like these truffles.

🥣Ingredients
(Only 2 main ingredients - decorations are optional)
- Chocolate sandwich cookies (Oreos)
The base of the truffles, providing a rich chocolate flavor and structure once crushed. - Cream cheese
Softened cream cheese binds the cookie crumbs together and creates a smooth, truffle-like texture. - White and black candy melts (decoration)
Used to create the signature soot sprite eyes. - Star sprinkles (decoration)
A fun nod to the candy stars (konpeito) soot sprites are always carrying.
See recipe card for quantities.

📖Instructions

Step 1:
Add the chocolate sandwich cookies to a food processor and pulse until they resemble fine sand. Transfer to a large bowl, setting aside about ¼ cup of crumbs for rolling later.
Add the softened cream cheese to the bowl and mix with clean hands or a rubber spatula until fully combined. The mixture should look like a soft dough.

Step 2:
Using a 1–2 tablespoon cookie scoop, portion the mixture onto a parchment-lined plate. Freeze for 15–20 minutes until firm.

Step 3:
While the truffles chill, melt the candy melts. Pipe small white circles onto a silicone mat, then use a toothpick to dot black pupils. Place the pupil slightly off-center for extra cuteness.

Step 4:
Roll the chilled truffles between your palms until smooth, then roll them in the reserved cookie crumbs. Attach the candy eyes and star sprinkles using a small amount of melted candy melts.

Hint: I prefer candy melts over white chocolate as it's easy to work with. Plus the true white and black colors give it a more cartoon look.
Substitutions and Variations
- Use any chocolate sandwich cookie instead of Oreos.
- Swap cream cheese for dairy-free cream cheese to make them vegan (check cookie ingredients as well).
- If you don’t have candy melts, melted white and dark chocolate works too.
- Add a drop of peppermint extract for a mint-chocolate version.
- Roll the truffles in black cocoa powder instead of cookie crumbs for a darker look.
- Skip the decorations and enjoy them as simple 2-ingredient cookie truffles.

You do need some equipment for this recipe.

- Mixing bowl
- Rubber spatula or clean hands
- Cookie scoop
- Parchment paper
- Silicone mat or parchment for candy eyes

Storage
Store soot sprite truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. For longer storage, freeze them for up to 1 month and thaw in the fridge before serving.
Top Tip
Chilling the truffle mixture makes rolling much easier and keeps the truffles perfectly round. If they start to soften while decorating, pop them back into the fridge for a few minutes.
